Engage

The SCHFH volunteer experience is unique

“HFH offers people a way to put their faith into action”
-Millard Fuller

Volunteers engage in hands on community building with little or vast experience to share.  They serve with friends and make new ones and work alongside the beneficiary of their labor.  These beneficiaries are people in your community; they drive your kids to school, deliver your mail and protect your safety.  At the end of the day, you can see the impact that you have made in just a few short hours.

We value any time and skill that you would like to share with us.  Beyond working on the actual homes, we have a variety of other opportunities available that will help us to provide decent and affordable housing for those in need.  We invite you to volunteer on one of our committees, teach a course for our homeowners, become an advocate, and/or host a fundraiser.  Please take a moment to review our current needs to see if there is an effort that you feel best matches your interest.

Habitat for Humanity is building much more than houses…

“Habitat for Humanity is building much more than houses. By building hope it is building relationships, strengthening communities, and nurturing families.”
- Paul Newman, Actor

Hope. When you opened your business or joined your work team, you did so with plans and hopes for success, by whatever standard that is measured by your business or by you personally. Your journey likely began with support from your family, your peers, perhaps your bank, and your church. It began full of excitement at what was to come and what you might achieve. Every day a potential homeowner partner reaches out to Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity full of that same hope and ambition. Their dream is to achieve stability, safety, and financial and personal security for their families by earning the opportunity for safe, affordable homeownership in its many forms. For some, that dream is to own a home; while for others that dream is to re-build the community in which their simple home currently stands.

Investing in low income homeownership opportunities as a team building volunteer experience means changing the lives of families and communities. Building a home alongside a family in the process of realizing their dream is life changing for those who volunteer to be a part of it. It is tangible. It is permanent. There is no other experience like it, and it touches and changes those who share the experience as a team. On the build site, CEOs are carpenters and painters alongside their administrative staff; the importance of family is front and center; and camaraderie is being built as well as shelter.

When you invest in family and community partners with Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity, your organization will have the opportunity to give back and make a positive change as well as establish an enduring legacy. Building a program or a home provides an opportunity to participate in shaping the impact you will have on families and communities, in sharing your company’s goodwill, and in building new relationships within and around the project and its partners.

All aspects of the Habitat program are structured to nurture families and break the poverty cycle with the intention that successful homeowners will help to transform communities. The Habitat model goes beyond affordable housing, Habitat works with and for the families with whom it partners for each home or revitalization project to ensure their success. This type of investment, financial and educational, is the key to building successful homeowners and communities.

Impact

The power is in your hands to create a measurable result that can be reflected upon.

You can make an impact. You can do so locally. The person who will feel that impact is someone you know, or someone you could know. You interact with a potential Habitat partner family every day.
They are your teachers, your mail carriers, your fire fighters, your public safety officers, your bus drivers, and your day care workers. They work in hospitals, schools, court houses, stores and restaurants. Habitat partners are working families whose income does not allow them to qualify for traditional homeownership lending opportunities. Our partners are mothers, daughters, uncles, grandmothers and brothers. They are those who are ready to do anything they can for the chance to own a home, or to improve the one in which they live.

The impact of your support of SCHFH is to create the opportunity for someone in your community to earn a home and a zero percent mortgage; or to caulk the windows of an elderly neighbor who has been hanging blankets in the windows for two years; or to rehabilitate the foreclosed and derelict home on the block two streets away; or to teach a homeowner partner how to open and manage their first ever bank account.

The impact of your decision to support Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity is simply to change a life in big and small ways, tangibly and forever.

Grants to Green

G2GSealGrants to Green provides environmentally focused knowledge and funding to strengthen nonprofits.  This partnership between The Community Foundation and Southface gives metro Atlanta nonprofits the opportunity to renovate or build healthier work places that are energy, water, and environmentally efficient.  The ultimate goal is to improve a nonprofit organization’s building structure to not only have less of an environmental impact, but also to increase the cost-efficiency of operations, ideally saving more finances to provide more services.
